Nothing too crazy has happened lately! I've just been busy working. I even worked on the 4th of July! Un-American, I know... As a summer student, I only get three days off, and that didn't include Independence Day. Since I am planning on using those three days towards the end of July, I decided to just work this past Monday. I got off a little earlier than usual anyway. I never seem to spend this national holiday in a special or exciting way. I'll have to change that in the future!
A couple of days ago, I was running, and I went a little further than usual along the lake path. I ended up "running into" Fullerton Beach! I was pretty excited (Land ahoy!). I'm going to keep trying to run further and further each time until I can make it to North Ave. Beach and back. Just 'cause ;) Oh yeah, I have no idea how far I am actually running. I should probably look into that...
Today, sometime between when I left the apartment and when I arrived to work, my phone mysteriously shut off, while simply sitting in my backpack. I tried to turn it on, and it refuses to do so, even though it was fully charged when I left the apartment. Needless to say, I am not a happy camper. When I get back to the apartment today, I'll try plugging and seeing what happens. It better work or else [insert relevant, yet unrealistic threat]!!! Why do I have such horrible luck with electronics? I'm like King Midas, except instead of gold, everything I touch dies, and my "power" is limited to electronics (great simile, I know!).
Since I was feeling like such a grump (http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Grumpy), I decided to go get some chocolate (great excuse, right?). I had actually been wanting to try Vosges Haut Chocolate, and it was only a short walk away. Although I don't eat chocolate often, I did used to work at a chocolate store in my hometown, so I enjoy trying different brands/stores. I bought a sample of their milk chocolate bacon (it was shaped like a pig--adorable), and it was really delicious. Sweet and salty--yummy! I also absolutely loved their Aztec Elixir drink (ancho & chipotle chillies + cinnamon + vanilla bean + dark chocolate), as well as their Organic Habana Candy Bar (plantain chips + milk chocolate = amazing). Basically, this chocolate store was pretty fancy! It was expensive, too (I felt like I was in an expensive clothing store!), but I'm really glad I tried it. I especially enjoyed the story/mission behind it, which I read on the back of the candy bar haha. You can find it here, if you're interested: http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/who_we_are
As I'm sitting here in the lab, I see how sunny it is outside, and I can't wait to get out of work soon! I hope this beautiful weather keeps getting better 8)
I leave you with this:

It's cloudy outside
Hi everyone!
The race went pretty well on Saturday. I woke up early, ate a breakfast of champions (obviously necessary), and headed over to the subway/train to take the Red Line to Soldier Field. From the Roosevelt stop, it was actually a pretty long walk over to the stadium. Honestly, I didn't know where I was going, but thankfully, there were other people that had been on the 'L' (look I'm using Chicagoan lingo... do you think I blend in?) with me that were headed there. So I followed them, at a short distance... is that creepy...? Anyway, I finally got to the stadium around 7:30am (the race started at 8am), and there were lots of people and tents. Soon after, everyone headed over to the starting line, and before I knew it, a horn went off, and a pack of people started running. Eventually, the pack broke up, and I didn't feel so crowded anymore. During the race, I saw all different kinds of runners, including members of the team "blade runners." Most of them had one or two prosthetic legs. They definitely have my respect! They are pretty fast, too. I think it's great that science can help people overcome obstacles to do some pretty amazing things. I finished the 5K in 29:10, and my average per mile was 9:24. Not too bad! Carlos and Danielle came to meet me at the end of the race. They were both wearing blue. I asked them if they planned it, and of course, they denied it... ;) There was a bunch of free food in all of the tents. I definitely took advantage of it! I even took some for the road, like any nomad would. I had so much fun running the race that I am actually considering running a 10K on July 17th, but I don't think I will have time to prepare for that, since the most I have run is four miles. It would be pretty cool though! Why stop now? I should just keep runnin'. Please enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYndRJU_Lvc
Later that day, Carlos and Danielle went off to a wedding, and I took their picture, prom-style, before they left. Keepin' it classy as always. Afterwards, I ran to Jewel (yes, I ran again) to buy some groceries. I kept my headphones because my iPod is amazing (duh), and then while I was perusing near the vegetables, I heard people singing. I paused my music and followed the singing voices. In the fruit section, right next to the Chiquita bananas, there was a Chiquita banana girl singing a song, which I had heard before, but I don't know the name. Her "crew" was around her singing and slappin' da bass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W3NERMKIBM). There were video cameras recording them, and I found out after they had left that they were protesting something. I have no idea what... Something about Chiquita bananas and Canada? Beats me.
On Monday, I was in the mood for pizza. Naturally, I googled "best pizza in Chicago," and tried to find out where I should go try some Chicago-style pizza. I had had Giordano's once before, but I was looking for something new--a hidden secret perhaps. While I was at work, I asked my brother if he wanted to go grab some pizza later, and he said sure and recommended Pequod's Pizza. They were famous for their caramelized crust on their pan (deep-dish) pizza. After I got off work, my brother, Danielle, and I headed over to this restaurant. I had high expectations, and they were definitely met! The pan pizza was delicious. When faced with the last piece of the pan, I may or may not have gulped down a third piece, like my brother. Danielle couldn't quite hang with us, and she only had two ;) haha. When I got home, I knew I had ate too much. But it just hurt so good...
Those are the main highlights from the past few days. Lately, I have also been compiling a list of things I need to do before I leave Chicago. It includes such things as go to a Cubs game, visit Chinatown, go to Scooter's Frozen Custard, explore Taste of Chicago, hang out at Navy Pier, and the list goes on... Yesterday was a long day at work. I was there till almost 8:30pm! We were busy doing major scientific discoveries, ya know. Today I was supposed to leave early at 4pm, but I just found out I get to leave even earlier, aka NOW!!! I am so happy! Mostly because I'm headed to go shopping downtown with Danielle. :) I am excited for the weekend!

Lucky Number
After I got off work yesterday, I signed up for the CMH Run For The Kids 5K! They assigned me a number, 1028, and 28 is my favorite number, so I was pretty excited about that. They also gave me a free shirt! It feels like a dri-fit shirt, made of 100% polyester. I think it's pretty cool, especially since I've never done this before.
I am happy to be running on Saturday, even though I know I don't run very fast at all haha. The running route/loop starts and ends at Soldier Field, and you know how much I love them (Chicago) Bears! :)
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Why not?
Because I haven't been to church the past two Sundays, I went to bed last night with the resolution that I would go to church in the morning. I had passed a church called St. Alphonsus last week, and I thought it would be a nice choice. However, I woke up tired and (sleep) talked myself out of it. When I arrived at work this morning, I mentioned to my mentor how I had really wanted to go to church this morning, but wasn't able to do so. She said "but it's Tuesday, why did you want to go to church?" and I responded, "why not?" I think this is a question I've been asking myself a lot lately and maybe one I should ask myself more often. I don't mean this just in relation to faith, but in daily life. How many things have you chosen not to do without asking yourself "why not?"
Tonight after I got off work, my brother, Carlos, and I went to dine at Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant. I had never had Ethiopian cuisine, so I had figured, what better place to use my restaurant certificate? I'm always interested in trying new food. It was delicious! And it was excellent service too. The food, primarily meat and vegetables, is eaten with your hands and is "scooped" up by this yummy, light spongy bread. Definitely a new favorite!
Once we got home, there was more organizing of the apartment. It actually looks semi-normal now. Define normal?
Good night, from this comfy black couch I call my bed ;)

Guess what happened yesterday...
A mouse bit me! It happened while getting animal-trained. I mean, I thought we were developing a friendship, Ratatouille-style, and next thing I know, he bit through my gloves. He even made me bleed a little. Needless to say, our friendship was short-lived... Then a few minutes later the two practice mice were placed in a CO2 gas chamber, so I guess he went out with a bang...
So I was reading the NY Times this morning, and I came across this article the main page: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/11/health/11cancer.html?_r=1&hp ... Funny 'cause we just had an accident with formaldehyde in the lab on Thursday, and we had to deal with some of the nasty fumes... Welp, it wasn't anything too crazy, but good to know?
My brother and I went to the grocery store again, another thrilling adventure, and he was shocked by the amount of milk I drink. We're learning so many new, fascinating things about each other haha.
Well, we'll see if I make it downtown later for some festivals and fun!

All Of The Lights
All of the lights went out in my neighborhood tonight. Yeah, sorry, but that wasn't a direct shout out to Kanye... Anyway, I was home alone when it happened, so typical me, I got scared. Do we ever really get over our fear of the dark? Not this girl... Looks like some things we never grow out of.
I got out of work early today, so I decided to go to the movies. Danielle and I wanted to see Incendies, and my phone app told me it was playing at this theater on Clark. Thanks Poynt app for once again giving me false info. First you tell me The Spicy Pickle exists (it was a sandwich place)--nope. Yeah Amanda, Incendies is playing at 5:10--just kidding lolol. Anyway, we got to the theater and watched Tree of Life instead. I love weird, but that movie was something else. I hate to say it, but I didn't like it. Bummer!
This is completely unrelated, but techno was playing on a radio station in my brother's car tonight, and I miss clubs playing it in Mexico. Ya know I got major love for some killa beats.
My phone battery is dying, so later gators!

Trying to go with the flow
It's my second week in Chicago... I'm slowly working towards getting all of my things organized. Right now I am sitting in the research library here in the CMRC typing this before I brave out into the crazy hotness that is outside. I guess today was supposed to be the hottest day Chicago has had in like 5 years? Well, it's 94 degrees right now, so that's intense. I like hot weather, but when I have a 20 min walk ahead of me, I'm not feelin' it so much, ya know?
Last Friday, I moved from Danielle's apartment to my brother's new apartment. It's a nice place! It's in a nice neighborhood, too. The first couple days, all of our stuff was everywhere, but now it's a little more organized. Eventually it will all get put in order. I've been sleeping on the couch in the living room, and it's okay so far. I like to think I'm pretty adaptable so I'm too worried ;)
On Sunday, I went to dinner with my friend Caitlin, who lives in a suburb of Chicago, and her family. Before we got to this delicious Cuban restaurant, we walked around Wrigleyville, and the area looked really fun! There were bars everywhere, and I guess if you're going to live in Chicago, you gotta be a Cubs fan. I've actually never been to a (MLB) baseball game ("are you American!?"), so I should probably get on that, as my friend Maria would say. I definitely want to try new things this summer! So let's see what happens. Go with the flow?
Lately in the lab, I have been sectioning the midbrain of those rats that were perfused last week. We've been testing out which way is best to gather the most sample of substantia nigra... Yesterday I was in front of the Cryostat for like three hours sectioning a midbrain. Interesting, but after a while, I was getting delirious... When I started muttering to myself, I knew it was time to peace out for the day haha. After I got done, I walked back to the apartment, left my bookbag, and went off to Jewel! It's the supermarket around here. There isn't a Walmart :( I had already gone to Jewel with my brother on Friday, but I wanted to get a few more things, including mangos, apples and bananas. When I got home, I may or may not have googled "how do you know if a mango is ripe?" Yuppp... Also, on my way to and back from Jewel, I passed through a really nice, fancier neighborhood, and I decided to make it one of my new running routes. Anyway, when I finally got home, I ended up putting on an apron (was that necessary... ?), putting on some Chris Brown (necessary), and making a salad for a late dinner. I felt so domestic.
Also, just a bonus anecdote, but my friend Patrick showed me the trailer to this movie, and it looks really interesting. I love Gael GarcĂa Bernal! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbdOnGNBMAo ... It was released a few months ago, so I'm not sure I'll find it around here. But I definitely want to see it! I need to rent some good movies.
Well, I'm going to head out into the "sauna," but I'll keep y'all posted.

The First Entry
Reporting live from Chicago! Chitown, The Windy City, Chi-city...
I'm a summer student in a neurobio lab at Children's Memorial Research Center, and I'll be spending the next couple months here in Chicago. I'm staying with my brother in his new apt on the north side of the city. However, I'm currently staying at his girlfriend's and her sister's apt since he's still getting things organized. I'm sleeping on an air mattress on their living room floor... and I still will be when I'm moved in at his place. I'm such a nomad ;) ...but really, I feel like one all of the time! I feel like I've been on the run since last summer. I finished my sophomore year, I came home for a week or so, and then I went to Colombia for about a week. After that trip, I went home for a couple of days I think, and then I was off to Cleveland for a summer program... It ended in late July, and then I was off to Puebla, Mexico for almost five months! We traveled almost every weekend. Needless to say, I've learned to pack light.
Yesterday was my first day at the research lab. I got there around 9:30am, and my faculty mentor went over the projects with me. For lunch, we went to a Thai place across the street called Noodles in the Pot. I got the Chicken Coconut Curry, and it was so delicious! After lunch, I went into lab, and I got to watch perfusions being done on rats. For those with a weak stomach, don't pay attention to the next few lines. They took each rat from the cage, knocked it out with sodium barbital, and then broke open its rib cage. I saw the inside of the rat's chest while his heart was still beating! It was pretty cool. I do feel bad for the rat though... Poor Nibbles. Anyway, then the distal artery was clamped off, and saline was injected in through the left ventricle and out the aorta, which replaced the blood in the upper half of the body. So yeah, the perfusion was pretty bloody! Then the rat's head was cut off using a rat-sized guillotine. The skull was cracked, and the brain was taken out and dissected. Intense.
Today was my second day of work. I've decided to walk to the CMRC every morning, and it's around a 25 min leisurely walk. Today we made some solutions in the morning, and after lunch I read some articles until about 5:30pm... Afterwards I went to Pita Pit to grab something to eat. I can't wait to go grocery shopping soon so I can make my own lunch and dinner! I even made a shopping list :) When I was little, I always loved going to Rulli's or IGA with my mom, and while I was in Mexico, I liked going to Walmart to buy ingredients to make my own meals. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lPQZni7I18 <-- duh)
So far, I've gone running a couple of times around the lake. There weren't too many people the first time I went on Tuesday morning, but when I went last night, there were so many people! It was definitely crowded. It's nice to see so many people care about their fitness and enjoy running, biking, walking, etc. I also passed a bunch of tennis courts while I was running, but too bad I didn't bring my racket... I'm thinking of doing a 5K, Children's Memorial Hospital Run for the Kids, but I have yet to decide! But as you know, I'm pretty indecisive, so this could take a while...
Welp, that's all I got for now!
